Team in Action

Mathematics is not only about numbers, formulas, and exercises in a textbook. It is also about understanding the world around us, solving everyday problems, making decisions, and finding practical solutions. The Turkish team of the CREW – Creative and Responsible Environment Warriors project had the opportunity to experience this in a different and exciting way by using the international mathematics workbook created within the project.

The workbook brings mathematics closer to real life through six different themes: Ecology, Agriculture, Fishing and Navigation, Food, Fun, Sports and Logical Thinking. Instead of simply solving traditional textbook exercises, students are encouraged to explore mathematical ideas through practical situations, experiments, observations, and problem-solving activities.

The Turkish team particularly enjoyed working with the activities related to Maths in Agriculture. These activities provided an excellent opportunity to see how mathematics can be connected with the food

production and with situations that people may encounter in everyday life. Students worked on problems involving calculations, distances, quantities, directions, and logical thinking while discovering how mathematical skills can be useful beyond the classroom.

Using the workbook also encouraged students to work together. They discussed the problems, exchanged ideas, compared different ways of reaching a solution, and checked their answers together. Some activities required students to think creatively rather than simply apply a memorised formula. This made the learning process more interactive and enjoyable.

One of the most important outcomes was that students began to see mathematics from a different perspective. They realised that mathematical knowledge can be useful when planning a journey, calculating costs, understanding measurements, protecting natural resources, or making decisions in real-life situations. Mathematics became something practical rather than just another school subject.

The workbook also created an opportunity for students to connect their own experiences with those of young people from other European countries. Knowing that the activities had been prepared collaboratively by students and teachers from Turkey, Romania, Portugal, Italy, Poland, and Czechia made the experience even more meaningful. Our students were not simply using a workbook—they were using a product created through international cooperation.

Working with the CREW mathematics workbook showed us that learning can be more effective when students are given the chance to explore, discuss, experiment, and solve problems together. It also demonstrated that mathematics can be fun when it is connected to topics that students can recognise from real life.

For the Turkish team, the workbook was more than a collection of mathematics activities. It was a way of discovering mathematics in unexpected places and experiencing the power of learning through cooperation.

Sometimes, all it takes to make mathematics more interesting is to look at it from a different angle! 🌊🧭📐➗
